Guy Barnett, Attorney-General

The Tasmanian Government is cracking down on offenders who boast about their crimes online or social media.

Draft legislation to implement our Post and Boast laws has now been released for public comment, delivering on a key commitment.

Attorney-General, Guy Barnett, said our Liberal Government is sending a strong message that criminal behaviour, and a culture of boasting about criminal behaviour, will not be tolerated in Tasmania.

“This delivers on the Government’s commitment under our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future to strengthen sentencing laws and better protect victims.

“The legislation will introduce a new aggravating factor for courts to consider when sentencing offenders who publish material that boasts about or glorifies their criminal activity online.

“This includes posts shared on platforms such as TikTok, Snapchat and other social media channels.

“This is another important law reform by the Tasmanian Government to stamp out dangerous and harmful crime.

"It follows the strong action taken to remove good character references in sentencing for serious crimes, the banning of displaying terrorist symbols, and the introduction of Workplace Protection Orders."

Submissions on the draft Sentencing Amendment (Publication of Criminal Activity) Bill 2026 are now open and must be received by midnight on Sunday 19 July 2026.

Further information, including the draft Bill and details on how to make a submission, is available on the Department of Justice website.
