New multi-use swim centre makes a splash

A state-of-the-art community swim centre has opened in the State’s south, with Tasmanian Government funding helping deliver the project.

Minister for Sport, Nick Duigan, said the Southern Beaches Swim Centre was developed by local residents Luke Doerner, a former Olympic hockey player, and his wife Belinda, a physiotherapist.

“It is so important for Tasmanians to keep active, and we know having accessible facilities for people of all ages and abilities is critical to this,” Minister Duigan said.

“Our Government has delivered on our $5.6 million commitment for this multi-use swim centre, as part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future.

“The Southern Beaches Swim Centre will offer learn-to-swim education and training for all ages, as well as hydrotherapy, aqua aerobics classes and recreational swimming, and physiotherapy and rehabilitation services.”

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Kerry Vincent, said he was pleased to see the dedication of Luke and Belinda Doerner come to life, which will add to other private swimming offerings in the area.

“This public swim centre has far-reaching benefits for the community, and I’ve backed this project from the beginning. It compliments and increases swimming facilities in the area, with a dedicated disability accessibility ramp,” Minister Vincent said.

“Not only is this a great local facility, construction of the Southern Beaches Swim Centre has also supported jobs. Additionally, 30 local residents have secured work at the centre, including as lifeguards, learn-to-swim instructors, and reception and café staff, which is a fantastic outcome.

“I can’t wait to see the facilities being used and enjoyed by future generations.”

The Southern Beaches Swim Centre is now open to the public. The centre is located at 521 Old Forcett Road, Dodges Ferry.
