Investing in Vocational Education and Training for young Tasmanians

The Tasmanian Government is boosting Vocational Education and Training opportunities for learners at Bayview Secondary College through a $1.5 million investment.

To support the delivery of an innovative new initiative at the college called Beyond the Plate, the Government will upgrade school facilities.

The upgrades will transform an existing workshop, delivering a commercial kitchen and dining space that will support hands-on training and real-world learning experiences, enabling students to undertake courses in hospitality, horticulture, cookery, and tourism.

Minister for Education, Jo Palmer, said through our Government’s 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we’re delivering important new education pathways for our learners.

"Beyond the Plate is a fantastic example of a community-driven project that will help students develop valuable, industry-relevant skills,” Minister Palmer said.

“This is more than just an investment in new facilities; it’s an investment in Tasmania’s future.

"Vocational education plays an essential role in helping students explore career pathways, gain practical skills and build confidence for life beyond school.

"We want all of our learners to have access to opportunities that set them up for success, no matter where they live.

"By investing in these new training facilities, we're ensuring students have access to the learning environments they need to succeed.”

The initiative is further supported by a $1 million investment from the Tasmanian Community Fund, with facility upgrades aiming to be complete for the 2027 school year.
