Granny flat consultation closes

The Tasmanian Government is delivering changes to allow larger secondary residences, or granny flats, and consultation has now closed.

The draft amendment delivers an increase to the maximum floor area for a granny flat from 60m2 to 90m2, providing greater flexibility for Tasmanian families and helping to deliver more diverse housing options.

Minister for Housing and Planning, Kerry Vincent, said the consultation process had provided an important opportunity for Tasmanians to have their say on the proposed planning reforms.

"Thanks to everyone who took the time to review the proposal and make a submission," Minister Vincent said.

"The Government is committed to making it simpler and faster to deliver a variety of housing options, while ensuring planning changes are informed by community feedback."

A total of 18 representations were received during the consultation period.

Feedback on the draft amendment will be made public in coming weeks and considered by the Tasmanian Planning Commission.

“The proposed changes build on the Government's commitment to increasing housing choice and supporting contemporary living arrangements,” Minister Vincent said.

"Larger granny flats have the potential to provide more flexible housing for families, older Tasmanians, carers and adult children, while making better use of existing residential land.

"These reforms are about providing practical housing solutions and supporting the delivery of more homes for Tasmanians.

“Our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s future is about taking more action on the issues affecting us most right now, such as housing, which is what these changes are all about.”
