Bellerive ferry terminal construction to begin

Work to upgrade the Bellerive ferry terminal will start this week as part of the Tasmanian Government’s commitment to deliver an expanded Hobart ferry network and improve public transport options.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Kerry Vincent, said our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future is delivering a better public transport system.

“The $7 million project will deliver a more comfortable and convenient experience for ferry passengers while supporting future growth and encouraging more people to use the ferry as part of their daily commute,” Minister Vincent said.

“The upgraded terminal will provide a significantly improved experience for passengers, with modern indoor waiting areas, seating, secure bicycle storage and digital information screens.
“The designs have been shaped by community feedback, resulting in a passenger-focused facility.

“This is a significant milestone in our Government's commitment to expand ferry services under the draft River Derwent Ferry Masterplan.

“What began as a trial service under our Government has grown into an important part of Greater Hobart's public transport network, with more than 500 passengers a day travelling between Bellerive and Hobart.

“As demand continues to grow, we are delivering the investment needed in our ferry infrastructure and making the most of the River Derwent as a transport corridor.”

The Bellerive upgrades are the first step in the broader plans to expand the service to locations including Lindisfarne, Sandy Bay and Wilkinson's Point.

“We will keep the community updated as construction progresses and as planning continues for the future expansion of the River Derwent ferry network,” Minister Vincent said.

"We appreciate there will be some disruption to the area and thank everyone for their patience during construction."

The Bellerive ferry terminal upgrades are expected to be completed mid 2027.

The existing ferry service will not be impacted by the new works and there will be clear guidance for pedestrians and ferry passengers. Temporary access will be slightly towards the fish punt.
