The next generation of Tasmanian doctors have started their careers across the State’s public hospitals, providing a boost to our health system.
Placements have begun for 80 new first-year doctors, with this number rising to 100 when an additional begin in coming months.
The 2026 intake has started work at the Royal Hobart Hospital, the Launceston General Hospital, the North West Regional Hospital.
Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Bridget Archer welcomed the clinicians and highlighted the vital contribution they will make on the frontline of Tasmania’s health system.
“Doctors-in-training are essential to delivering the high-quality care Tasmanians rely on, and I’m excited to welcome the 2026 cohort of interns to the Tasmanian Health Service,” Minister Archer said.
“Tasmania offers an outstanding environment for early career doctors, rich with clinical and teaching opportunities to learn, develop and, most importantly, make a meaningful impact in their communities.
“After completing their orientation programs, our new interns have now commenced working as valued members of our hospital teams. Over the next year, they will work alongside highly skilled senior doctors while rotating through a range of specialties, including Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, and General Medicine.
“It’s especially pleasing that many of this year’s interns are local graduates from the University of Tasmania who have chosen to start their careers in their home-state. This reflects the strong and ongoing partnership between the Tasmanian Health Service and UTAS.
“To all the medical interns across the State who are starting their careers within the Tasmanian health system, I commend you for choosing Tasmania as a place to train, and wish you every success in your future career pathways.
“The Tasmanian Government is delivering across the health system to ensure our community has access to the healthcare services they need, when and where they need it.”
