Kerry Vincent, Minister for Housing and Planning
Tasmania is outstripping all other jurisdictions in its pursuit to deliver more social homes, new data has revealed.
Minister for Housing and Planning, Kerry Vincent, said the figures prove Tasmania’s committed to increasing the supply of social and affordable housing.
“Tasmania recorded an 11.2 per cent increase in social housing since 2020 - an additional 1547 dwellings,” Minister Vincent said.
“This is the highest growth rate in the country and an average of about 300 new dwellings each year.
“Our Government is delivering for Tasmania with our target of 10,000 additional social and affordable homes by 2032, and this data shows our plan is working.”
Median wait times for public housing for Housing Register applicants with the greatest need fell by four months in the last financial year.
“Our Government is providing housing to those most in need, with 100 per cent of Housing Tasmania’s public housing allocations made to people with the greatest need,” Minister Vincent said.
“This is significantly better than the national average of 84.6 per cent.”
The new Housing Connect model is providing more holistic support, assisting people with a range of services to improve community connections, health, employment and education and living skills.
A key goal of our improvements to Housing Connect is to provide more support at the first point of contact for people seeking help, addressing issues rapidly and reducing the need for more intensive support when things reach crisis point.
The Report on Government Services 2024-25 (RoGS) is Tasmania’s primary data source for measuring net social housing supply as outlined in the Tasmanian Housing Strategy Action Plan 2023-2027.
