Guy Barnett, Attorney-General

Mr Lloyd Babb SC has been appointed to help ensure that all Tasmanians have access to an efficient and effective criminal and civil justice system, with court proceedings finalised in a timely manner.

Mr Babb will focus on applying a systems approach to managing existing court backlogs, identifying strategies and mechanisms to support case flow, and developing a framework to measure the effectiveness of any new strategies.
Attorney-General, Guy Barnett, said court delays, particularly in criminal matters, have real and lasting impacts, including on victim-survivors.

“While the Government and Courts have implemented various strategies to reduce backlogs, ongoing pressures remain and require a sustained, system-wide response,” the Attorney said.

“To better mitigate these challenges, Mr Lloyd Babb SC, Australian Barrister and former Director of Public Prosecutions in New South Wales and in the Northern Territory, has been appointed to improve the backlogs.

“Mr Babb’s professional background includes extensive experience in criminal law, prosecution and justice system administration.

“Mr Babb SC is highly qualified for this work and holds current and relevant experience.”

Access to justice is a cornerstone of our society, and this work will support the operation of the legal system by identifying practical solutions to reduce delays, improve efficiency, and ensure timely outcomes for all court users.

Mr Babb SC will engage with key stakeholders to seek their input and develop a backlog action plan.
