Nick Duigan, Minister for Parks
Works to future proof and protect Maria Island’s natural beauty have begun.
Almost $9 million will be invested to modernise water, wastewater and electrical infrastructure at Maria Island, with works starting earlier this year.
Minister for Parks, Nick Duigan, said equipment and contractors had arrived on the island and work was underway to prepare the site for groundworks.
“These critical infrastructure upgrades on Maria Island are essential to supporting a sustainable visitor experience,” Minister Duigan said.
“The initial focus is on critical preparatory and groundworks, which need to occur during summer to optimise progress during the lower rainfall period.
“Works have been programmed with consideration for visitors to the island over this busy period and contractors are working to minimise disruptions.
“We thank visitors to the Island for their patience during these works.”
Local business Spectran Civil Pty Ltd will deliver the project which includes:
* A new wastewater treatment plant that meets contemporary standards
* Decommissioning and site rehabilitation of the existing wastewater treatment plant
* Connecting existing serviced buildings within Darlington to the pressure sewer system, and new water and electrical connections that meet contemporary standards
* Upgrades to the fire water main providing a dedicated service line to the staff houses
* Upgrades to the raw water capacity and supply pipeline
* Remedial works to the airstrip
Visitors are asked to comply with directions from staff or signage in the area.
Keep up to date with current alerts and closures on the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service website.
Works are expected to be completed in late 2026.
