The Tasmanian Government is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Simon Gates as Tasmania’s new State Litigator.
Mr Gates brings extensive experience across both public and private legal practice, having served as Assistant State Litigator since August 2024 and as Acting State Litigator since March 2025.
Attorney-General, Guy Barnett, said Mr Gates’ appointment followed a comprehensive and competitive selection process.
“Mr Gates is an accomplished and highly respected legal practitioner,” the Attorney said.
“His deep experience across complex civil litigation, his strategic capability, and his strong leadership qualities make him exceptionally well suited to this important role.
“The State Litigator plays a critical role in protecting the interests of the Tasmanian community, and Mr Gates has demonstrated the integrity, professionalism, and strategic insight required to lead this work.
“I congratulate Mr Gates on his appointment and look forward to the leadership he will continue to bring to the Office of the State Litigator.”
Mr Gates has been appointed for a three-year term.
