One year on from opening and Legana Primary School is thriving.
Minister for Education, Jo Palmer, said it was wonderful to celebrate the milestone anniversary with students, staff and the broader community.
“There were 120 students who started at the school last year, and this year enrolments have grown close to 200,” Minister Palmer said.
“With its state-of-the-art classrooms, undercover sports court, library and Lego wall, the school is providing students with the education facilities they need and deserve.
“As one of the fastest growing areas in greater Launceston, we are so pleased to be able to deliver this school for families who live in Legana.
“Through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we are continuing our strong record of delivering new and upgraded education infrastructure for our students.”
Minister Palmer said the school has quickly become an important part of the Legana community.
“Over the past 12 months, we’ve seen the school build strong connections with the local community including a partnership with Regis Aged Care where residents visit to take part in gardening, reading and art activities, and the school choir visits the home to sing each term,” Minister Palmer said.
“We also know children do better at school when their families are involved and engaged in their education, so it’s great to see the school establish its first School Association.”
The school also features an onsite oral health services dental clinic operated by the Department of Health, along with Outside School Hours Care provided by Discovery Early Learning Centres.
Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Bridget Archer, said the onsite clinic is ensuring young Tasmanians receive timely, high quality dental care close to home.
“The dental clinic has quickly become an essential service for local families, supporting 664 children with more than 1,280 appointments in its first year,” Minister Archer said.
“We are delivering for Tasmania by providing access to oral healthcare closer to home for the Legana community.
“With everything from routine check ups to urgent relief of pain delivered onsite, the clinic is helping children stay healthy and avoid preventable oral health issues.”
This $33.7 million project demonstrates the Tasmanian Liberal Government’s strong investment in new education and health infrastructure.
