Tackling Tasmanian court backlogs

Strong action is being taken to address court backlogs and improve the efficiency of Tasmania’s justice system, with work beginning immediately following the release of Lloyd Babb’s report.

After carefully considering Mr Babb’s work, the Tasmanian Government has accepted in full or in principle 19 of the 20 recommendations, with one recommendation requiring further consideration.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Corrections and Rehabilitation, Guy Barnett, said the release of the report and the Government’s response marked an important step in addressing court backlogs and improving the efficiency of Tasmania’s justice system.

“Our Government is committed to ensuring Tasmanians can access a justice system that is efficient, effective and responsive,” the Attorney-General said.

“Mr Babb has produced a comprehensive expert report to Government and I thank him for his significant contribution, expertise and engagement with stakeholders across Tasmania’s justice system.

“The recommendations will help inform the next phase of work to strengthen Tasmania’s justice system and deliver more timely outcomes for court users.

“Through our 2030 Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we’re identifying practical solutions to reduce delays, improve efficiency and ensure timely outcomes for all court users.

“Work will begin immediately to implement the reforms proposed by Mr Babb.”
