The Tasmanian Government is delivering strong new protections for dogs, with the Animal Welfare (Dogs) Regulations 2026 now in effect.
These regulations modernise Tasmania's dog welfare framework by establishing clearer standards for dog ownership and welfare, supported by new enforcement measures.
Minister for Primary Industries and Water, Gavin Pearce, said the new reforms reflect the strong community expectation that dogs in Tasmania are cared for humanely and responsibly.
“These changes have been shaped by significant public consultation, with almost 300 submissions received from Tasmanians on ways to improve dog welfare,” Minister Pearce said.
“It’s clear that Tasmanians want to see our dogs looked after.
“Our Liberal government continues to work with councils, animal welfare organisations, breeders, veterinarians and dog owners to implement these strong new animal welfare regulations.”
