Strengthening climate action in Tasmania

The Tasmanian Government has tabled its response to the fourth review of Tasmania’s climate change legislation.

Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Guy Barnett, said the review by independent consultants Ricardo and Era Advisory found the Climate Change (State Action) Act 2008 remained a strong foundation for ongoing climate change action.

"With over half our State protected in reserves, and our enviable renewable energy generation, Tasmania has proudly maintained its net zero status since 2014," Minister Barnett said.

"But we're not resting on our laurels. Our Climate Change Act includes the most ambitious emissions reduction target of any jurisdiction in Australia.

"The review confirmed that the Act continues to provide an effective framework for Tasmania’s climate response, while outlining opportunities to further strengthen governance, accountability and transparency in delivering our actions."

The Government supports all seven recommendations, either in principle or in full, and will be continuing to progress improvements to our climate framework.

“As an immediate action we will strengthen the Climate Change Reference Group by updating its Terms of Reference and increasing transparency through better reporting of meetings,” Minister Barnett said.

“We will also create a dedicated climate change portal where Tasmanians can access climate information, resources and updates in one place.

“Through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we’re continuing to deliver practical and balanced action on climate change.”
