The Tasmanian Government is delivering on its commitment to Northern Tasmania, announcing the first stage of economy-boosting initiatives for the region.
Business Events Tasmania will inject $6 million of economic activity into Northern Tasmania as part of a $200,000 investment to deliver more conferences for the region.
Beer Tasmania will be established to elevate the work of independent brewers across the region.
A collaboration with Hospitality Tasmania and the Independent Brewers Association, Beer Tasmania will develop a northern beer trail and a northern beer weekend, helping to showcase local brewers, attract visitors and drive economic activity.
Initial research has shown this collaboration could deliver 150 new jobs and up to $10 million in economic activity for Tasmania.
This investment is the first tranche of initiatives to be funded from the $1 million being returned to the State by LION following the closure of brewing operations at the Boag's site in Launceston.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the funding was being reinvested into initiatives that support jobs, business growth and economic opportunities across Northern Tasmania.
"Following our Northern Tasmania Economic Summit in July, we have listened to feedback and developed the first tranche of economy-boosting initiatives,”
Premier Rockliff said.
"Business events bring significant economic benefits to local accommodation providers, hospitality venues, retailers and tourism operators, including more patronage to our towns.
"For every $1 spent attracting business events, $30 is returned to the local economy.”
Investment in growing the economy and backing the regions is a key part of the Government’s 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future.
“From Little Rivers to Du Cane, we have independent brewers across the region that have built strong reputations,” Premier Rockliff said.
“Beer Tasmania will take this work to the next level by drawing visitors, strengthening awareness and backing local jobs.”
Initiatives announced today deliver on the four Pillars of the Northern Economic Summit - Jobs and Community Resilience; Innovation and business attraction; Industry and the economy; and Visitor economy.
Work is underway to develop the Northern Economic Plan following the extensive feedback and engagement at the Summit.
Our Government will continue working with industry, business and community representatives, with the plan and further strategic investments to be released at the end of August
