Construction progressing on new Burnie Courts Complex

Construction of the replacement Burnie Courts Complex is continuing to progress, with earth and demolition works at the Wilson Street site now complete.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Corrections and Rehabilitation, Guy Barnett, said the project was an important investment in the future of Tasmania's justice system and the wider North West region.

“The Burnie Courts Complex will support the contemporary delivery of court services through improved technology and modern facilities that meet the needs of the community now and into the future,” Minister Barnett said.

"This Complex will improve access to justice through the provision of two Magistrates Courts, one Supreme Court and a flexible multi-jurisdictional Court, while also improving safety, amenity and disability access for all court users.

"Through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we are investing in critical infrastructure that will improve access to justice for communities across the North West and provide modern, fit-for-purpose facilities for court users, staff and the wider community."

The project is now moving into its next phase, with piling and foundation works commencing soon.

Minister Barnett said the project would also deliver significant benefits for Tasmanian businesses, supporting local jobs and industry throughout construction.

"Fairbrother and Xsquared Architects are working alongside local subcontractors, suppliers and specialist consultants to draw on the expertise, capability and skills of the Tasmanian workforce throughout delivery of this important project,” Minister Barnett said.

The replacement Complex will be constructed at 106 Wilson Street in Burnie’s Central Business District and is expected to be complete in 2028.
