Honouring workers and renewing our commitment to safety

Tasmanians will tomorrow pause to remember those who have been injured or lost their lives at work and uniting to build safer workplaces.

Minister for Small Business, Trade and Consumer Affairs, Guy Barnett, said April 27 marked International Workers Memorial Day.

“Tomorrow is about remembering and honouring workers who have been killed or injured at work as a result of workplace incidents,” Minister Barnett said.

“It is also a time for each of us to renew our commitment to workplace health and safety.

“This important day highlights the preventable nature of most workplace incidents and reinforces the need for continued action to improve safety standards across all industries.

“Every worker has the right to return home safely at the end of the day.

“Behind every workplace tragedy is a person, a family and a community forever changed.

“Workplace safety is a shared responsibility. Employers, workers, industry bodies and government all have a role to play in preventing harm.

“The Tasmanian Government remains committed to supporting safe, fair and productive workplaces through strong regulation, education and collaboration with businesses and workers.”
