Guy Barnett, Deputy Premier
The Tasmanian Government's strong new laws to increase information gathering powers, improve transparency, strengthen compliance, and enhance Tasmania’s ability to act during fuel disruptions have received Royal Assent.
Deputy Premier Guy Barnett said these stronger tools are keeping fuel companies accountable and protecting Tasmanians.
"These strong, new laws are now in effect to protect Tasmanians," the Deputy Premier said.
"This means that we now have in place the power to gather all necessary information to plan for all contingencies, including requiring fuel companies to report on supply levels.
"Tasmania has been a quick mover in this space and other states are beginning to follow.
"As the situation continues to change, we are responding rapidly to provide cost of living relief and support for Tasmanians.
"We have secured a further reduction in the fuel excise.
"Free public transport and work to deliver additional funding for community food providers is about delivering for Tasmanians now as we respond.
"We will continue to advocate strongly for Tasmanians, work closely with the Federal Government and support local industries and businesses."
