Early data shows 5,000 more Tasmanians took a Metro bus on day one of free fares in Hobart when compared with the week before.
The Tasmanian Government introduced free public transport as an immediate and significant cost of living measure.
The thousands of additional passengers were primarily recorded during peak hours in the morning and evening.
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Kerry Vincent, said these early figures were welcome.
“We know the rising cost of fuel is impacting the family budget, and why we have again taken strong action,” Minister Vincent said.
“Tasmanians are showing with their feet they’re keen to take advantage of free public transport.
“We have delivered major cost-of-living relief to thousands of Tasmanians and their families through free public transport.
“When combined with TassieLink, Kinetic and the ferries – it is expected this number will be even higher.
“This initiative is helping Tasmanians save money.
“For a family with a couple of kids and a parent on the bus from Sorell into Hobart return that’s a saving of about $10 a day.
“We’re keen to continue delivering real support for Tasmanians and free public transport is a great way to provide it.”
