A new semi-commercial kitchen and dining hall has opened at Waverley Primary School today.

Delivered through a major grant from the Tasmanian Community Fund, and donations from community partners, the new spaces will deliver premium facilities for both students and the local community.

Minister for Education, Jo Palmer, said the benefits of the new facilities will extend beyond the classroom as we work together to move our state forward.

“This new kitchen isn’t just about cooking – it’s about building confidence and connecting with others,” Minister Palmer said.

“While students will learn how to cook, at the same time they will also develop their literacy, numeracy, teamwork and leadership skills.”

The school will deliver breakfast for students five days a week and lunch three days a week.

Cooking classes will be on offer for students and their parents, and the dining hall is available for community hire.

TasTAFE will also deliver a café and barista course onsite, giving adults the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in hospitality skills.

Liberal Member for Bass, Rob Fairs, said by collaborating with external providers, these new facilities will strengthen ties in the Waverley community and offer a vibrant hub for learning and vocational pathways.

The total cost of the project is $218,000, with the Tasmanian Community Fund contributing $135,000.

Donations were also received from the WD Booth Charitable Trust, City Baptist, the Cape Hope Foundation, the Cuthill Family Trust and the John Lewis Foundation.
