Guy Barnett, Minister for Small Business, Trade and Consumer Affairs
Tasmania has taken centre stage in Osaka as a proud partner in the Australian Pavilion at World Expo 2025, showcasing our world-class food and beverage industry.
Minister for Small Business, Trade and Consumer Affairs, Guy Barnett, said since the pavilion’s opening on 13 April 2025, more than two million visitors have passed through.
“World Expo 2025 offers a unique opportunity to highlight our premium produce with global audiences and to strengthen Tasmania’s trade relationships, particularly with Japan, one of our key export markets,” Minister Barnett said.
“Our food and beverages are increasingly appreciated on the world stage, and this event allows us to share the innovation, quality and passion that define Tasmanian products.
“A highlight of Tasmania’s presence is the live cooking demonstrations by acclaimed Tasmanian chef Andre Kropp, who participated with support from the Tasmanian Government.”
From Sunday, 31 August to Thursday, 4 September, Chef Andre showcased Tasmania’s exceptional ingredients, through a series of interactive culinary experiences for enthusiastic crowds at the Australian Pavillion.
A Friends of Tasmania Dinner on Tuesday night brought together a select group of Japanese buyers, distributors and stakeholders. The dinner highlighted a range of Tasmanian businesses, including Cape Grim Beef, Spring Bay Distillery spirits, Lamb of Tasmania, Tasman Sea Salt, Huon salmon and wines from Josef Chromy, Moorilla and Apsley Gorge.
A special soba noodle demonstration at the pavilion featured Tasmanian-grown buckwheat, first cultivated in the state in 1988. The event was a collaboration between Heazlewood Seeds and Shiratori Flour Mills of Japan and highlighted the quality and versatility of Tasmanian grains.
“These events are more than just culinary showcases, they are strategic opportunities to build relationships, promote Tasmanian exports, and reinforce our reputation for food and beverage excellence on a global stage,” Minister Barnett said.
“By supporting our industry and working hand in hand with producers, exporters and partners, we are delivering for Tasmania.
“This is about getting on with the job through a commonsense approach – creating new opportunities, strengthening international connections, and ensuring our state’s premium products continue to shine around the world.”
