Nick Duigan, Minister for Parks

The Ranger Exchange program is back for a second year, providing another exciting opportunity for a Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service staff member.

This year, PWS Great Western Tiers Field Officer, Michelle Cronly will take part in the program with the National Parks and Wildlife Service South Australia.

Minister for Parks, Nick Duigan, said he was pleased to see this program continue.

“This program provides a great opportunity to share knowledge and resources across different states, as well as the chance for staff to further develop skills and learn about other areas of Australia’s unique landscape,” Minister Duigan said.

“Field Officer Michelle Cronly will be swapping the picturesque Great Western Tiers with the Flinders and Outback region of South Australia.

“Michelle has been a member of our PWS staff since 2021 and will soon be faced with the contrasting landscapes and issues of outback life.

“Our Government is delivering for Tasmania, with programs like this where rangers get different experiences and ideas."

Michelle Cronly said she was inspired to throw her hat into the ring for the program after hearing stories from last year’s participant.

“I've always been captivated by Australia's wild, remote outback – the endless landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and unique geomorphology and wildlife. The opportunity to escape to the Flinders and Outback region of South Australia was so appealing to me,” she said.

“I'm particularly excited to see how the Parkies do things differently over there. I can't wait to experience the contrasting flora and fauna, learn about the deep connections between Aboriginal culture and country, conservation works, and hopefully spot a Thorny Devil lizard in the wild.

“The Ranger Exchange program will be transformative for both my professional development and personal growth.

“I'm excited to represent women in field-based careers and showcase the incredible opportunities available in remote work and field centres.”

Minister Duigan wished Ms Cronly well on her trip.

“I hope Michelle’s exchange is filled with fun, adventure and is safe. I look forward to welcoming the South Australian representative when they arrive here,” Minister Duigan said.

“Last year Ranger Abbey had a great experience, and I am eager to hear all about Michelle’s adventures during the program.”
