Guy Barnett, Attorney-General

The Government has released the Integrity Commission Amendment (Mandatory Notifications) Bill 2025 for consultation.

Attorney General, Guy Barnett, said this is an important Bill to implement a recommendation of the Commission of Inquiry, and related recommendations of the Cox Review.

The Bill introduces a mandatory requirement on principal officers of public authorities to notify the Integrity Commission of any matter or information that the principal officer suspects on reasonable grounds involves or may involve:

1. misconduct or serious misconduct by a designated public officer; or

2. serious misconduct by a public officer.

These amendments address recommendation 18.11 of the final report of the Commission of Inquiry into the Tasmanian Government’s Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in Institutional Settings to oblige public authorities to notify the Integrity Commission of any allegations of serious misconduct.

“This Bill is the first stage in the Government’s broader legislative reform program relating to the Integrity Commission Act,” the Attorney General said.

“A second Bill, proposing a number of reforms to implement recommendations from expert reviews including the Cox Review, is expected to be released for public consultation by the end of 2025.”

The Bill is available on the Justice Department’s website and will be open for consultation until October 26.
