Royal Hobart Hospital Emergency Department recognised with national awards

The Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) Emergency Department (ED) has received national recognition with several prestigious awards from the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine (ACEM).

The ED won the group ACEM Equity and Inclusion Award 2025 for its continually growing diversity and inclusion program, including its international medical graduate (IMG) orientation program for those who relocate from overseas to work at the ED.

Emergency medicine specialists Dr Kate Field and A/Professor Terry Brown were also recognised with the ACEM Distinguished Service Award and ACEM Teaching Excellence Award respectively.

As part of the IMG orientation program established in 2022, international graduate doctors are supported from before they arrive in Australia, during the transition and throughout their journeys, both in and outside of work.

The program has been highly successful – helping to grow the number of IMGs working in the ED, supporting staff retention and further making the ED an attractive place to work for emergency doctors.

Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Bridget Archer, commended the RHH ED and said the awards demonstrated its commitment to providing the best possible support to staff and care for patients.

“Congratulations to the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) Emergency Department team on winning the ACEM Equity and Inclusion Award,” Minister Archer said.

“It is further recognition of the excellent culture within the ED, after the team also received the ACEM Wellbeing Award in 2022 for the way it embeds wellbeing initiatives into its daily operations.

“A strong, supportive workplace culture is not only good for staff, but importantly helps to attract and retain health professionals, as well as contributing to better outcomes for our patients.

“I also wholeheartedly congratulate Dr Kate Field and A/Professor Terry Brown for being recognised for their commitment to the field of emergency medicine throughout their careers in Tasmania and beyond.”
