Guy Barnett, Attorney-General

The Tasmanian Government has today officially opened the new Launceston Registry of the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (TASCAT), marking a significant milestone in improving access to justice for Northern Tasmanians.

Attorney-General Guy Barnett said today was a key step forward in our Government’s commitment to ensuring that justice is accessible to all Tasmanians, regardless of where they live.

“TASCAT plays a vital role in our justice system and presents an important avenue for Tasmanians to seek justice,” the Attorney said.

“It provides a wide range of supports for Tasmanians, from mental health and guardianship to compensation and discrimination.

“The establishment of TASCAT has been one of the best reforms to the justice system in the past decade, providing simpler, easier, and cheaper access to justice for our businesses, community groups, and all Tasmanians.

“Our Government has worked hard to ensure TASCAT is best placed to serve our communities, and I’m proud of the progress we’ve made.

“Since its establishment in 2021, we’ve passed legislation to cut red tape and better streamline TASCAT’s processes, creating a more efficient service to better assist more Tasmanians.

“Our Government is delivering for Tasmanians, supporting them with compassion and common sense.”

The new registry has been designed with accessibility and flexibility in mind, featuring:

  • two large hearing rooms with operable walls
  • multiple mediation and consultation rooms
  • infra-red hearing loops and integrated AV systems
  • disability-accessible facilities
  • a reception desk designed for wheelchair user access.
