Jo Palmer, Minister for Education

The Tasmanian Government has committed $200,000 towards capital works of a new childcare centre in Latrobe, helping to secure services for families in the region.

Minister for Education, Jo Palmer, said our Government has been working to find a solution for families in the Latrobe region who will be affected by the planned closure of the St Patrick’s Centre at the end of 2025.

“We know a number of families and staff will be affected by the closure, in an area where there is already significant demand for services,” Minister Palmer said.

“The Tasmanian Government has committed $200,000 towards capital works to help pave the way for a new centre to become operational in the Latrobe region by early 2026.

“I’ve heard firsthand from local families about the impact losing childcare would have on them. We want to make sure dedicated educators stay in their jobs and that families can remain in the communities they know and love.

“I also want to acknowledge the tireless efforts of Latrobe Mayor Peter Freshney and the Council, who have been working closely with Lady Gowrie to urgently meet the needs of the community.”

Minister Palmer is working with the Federal Government to ensure the continuity of childcare services for Latrobe families next year.
