Works to modernise water, wastewater and electrical infrastructure at Maria Island will start next month, following the awarding of a contract.
Local business Spectran Civil was awarded the $8.9m contract following a competitive request for tender process, for the final stage of the critical infrastructure upgrades.
Minister for Parks Nick Duigan said the works were essential to supporting a sustainable visitor experience on the island.
“Through the Maria Island Rediscovered project, the Tasmanian Government has delivered critical infrastructure upgrades, enhancing the experience of visitors to the island,” he said.
“With visitor numbers to Maria Island continuing to grow, these upgrades are critical to protect the island’s natural and cultural values.
"We are delivering for Tasmania by investing in our natural assets."
The works include:
- A new wastewater treatment plant that meets contemporary standards
- Decommissioning and site rehabilitation of the existing wastewater treatment plant
- All existing serviced buildings within Darlington connected to the pressure sewer system, new water and electrical connections to meet contemporary standards
- Upgrades to the fire water main providing a dedicated service line to the staff houses
- Upgrades to the raw water capacity and supply pipeline
Works are expected to commence in December and be complete in quarter four 2026.
