Guy Barnett, Minister for Small Business, Trade and Consumer Affairs

Tasmanians are another step closer to not having to choose between a house and the pet they love.

The Residential Tenancy Amendment (Pets) Bill 2025 has passed the Tasmanian Parliament.

Minister for Small Business, Trade and Consumer Affairs, Guy Barnett, said the Government is delivering for Tasmania.

“This legislation ensures Tasmanian renters can have their treasured family pet living with them, as a right,” Minister Barnett said.

“Renters shouldn’t have to choose between having a place to live, and the pet they love. Similar laws already operate in other Australian jurisdictions, and I look forward to seeing Tasmanians enjoy that same right.”

“We know pets are part of the family, and our Government has been working to deliver the things that matter to Tasmanians, just like this reform.

“The Bill strikes the right balance, and I thank animal lovers and the real estate industry for working with Government on this Bill.”

The Government is now finalising the application processes to make it as simple as possible for tenants, property owners and property managers to make and respond to applications for pets in rentals, ahead of the expected commencement of the provisions in early 2026.
