Works to construct a new shelter at the Trevallyn Nature Recreation Area have commenced, replacing what was formerly known as the Hoo Hoo Hut.
The Hoo Hoo Hut was badly damaged by a tree fall during the September 2024 storm event.
Minister for Parks Nick Duigan said it was pleasing to see construction of a new structure had commenced.
“This new shelter will ensure the popular barbecue facility in the Nature Recreation Area can be used once again, servicing visitors to the Trevallyn Dam area,” Minister Duigan said.
“It will also have improved features including accessible picnic tables and new gas barbecue facilities replacing the former wood-fired barbecue.”
The original Hoo Hoo Hut was constructed by volunteers from the Hoo Hoo Forest Industries Club in the early 1980s.
The club’s membership was made up of timber industry workers who volunteered labour and materials for the construction of community spaces.
Minister Duigan said our Government is delivering for Tasmanians by working together to replace the shelter.
“The club’s logo was a black cat and many structures had a hidden cat image,” Minister Duigan said.
"The club is still in existence and remaining members have endorsed the replacement shelter."
Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service staff retained stones from the original fireplace and barbecue site which will be used in the new bench seating. The project will be delivered by AJR Construct Pty Ltd.
Construction commenced today, with completion earmarked for late December.
Members of the public are asked to observe the safety barriers and signage in the area while construction is underway.
