Bridget Archer, Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing

The tender to build a new cardiac catheterisation laboratory (cath lab) at the Royal Hobart Hospital has been advertised, with construction expected to start early next year.

Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Bridget Archer, said this Liberal Government is delivering for Tasmania, with the new cath lab to enable the hospital to undertake more heart procedures.

“Our Government is investing $4.8 million to build a second cardiac catheterisation laboratory (cath lab) at the Royal Hobart Hospital,” Minister Archer said.

“Cath labs help diagnose and treat various heart conditions without requiring open-heart surgery.

“They can image the heart’s blood vessels to check for blockages, open blocked arteries using stents, and diagnose abnormal heart rhythms.

“This additional cath lab will ensure the hospital can undertake more heart procedures each year and reduce waiting times, so more people get the care they need when they need it.

“This project is an important part of our broader ongoing plan to significantly upgrade the Royal Hobart Hospital and equip our health staff with the contemporary facilities and tools they need to keep providing the high quality care that Tasmanians deserve.”

A construction contractor is expected to be appointed early next year, with the new cath lab expected to be operational by the end of 2026.
