The Tasmanian Government has released a discussion paper on the Family Violence Act 2004 and other related legislation, calling for community input to help shape the future of Tasmania’s response to family violence.

The release of this discussion paper is an important part of the Tasmanian Government’s commitment to continuously evaluate and improve its response to family violence, a core pillar of Tasmania’s Third Family and Sexual Violence Action Plan 2022 – 2027.

Minister for Women and Prevention of Family Violence, Jane Howlett, said eliminating family and sexual violence is a key priority of our government.

"Family violence is a complex issue that not only affects victim-survivors, but also their families and the wider community," Minister Howlett said.

“Every submission to this discussion paper has the ability to make real change, and I urge people of all backgrounds, right across Tasmania, to put your views forward.”

Attorney-General, Guy Barnett, said the Government remained steadfast in its approach to tackling the scourge of family violence.

“Family violence is simply unacceptable – no ifs, buts, or maybes,” the Attorney said.

“Continuous review and improvement of the Family Violence Act and other related legislation is incredibly important.

“This legislative review contributes to Tasmania’s role in the National Plan to End Violence against Women and Children 2022–2032, reinforcing our commitment to inclusive protections, a consistent risk assessment framework, and a justice system centred around victim-survivors.”

The discussion paper will be open to submissions until 1 March 2026 and can be found here.
