Gavin Pearce, Minister for Veterans’ Affairs
Today, we pause to honour the courage of the men and women who have served and sacrificed for our country.
Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Gavin Pearce, said Remembrance Day is a significant date on Tasmania’s commemorative calendar, with services and wreath-laying ceremonies held across the State.
“I encourage every Tasmanian to take a moment, whether by attending a local service, wearing a red poppy, or pausing for silence at 11am, to reflect on the bravery and sacrifice of those who served,” Minister Pearce said.
“More than 17,500 veterans and ex-serving personnel call Tasmania home, with countless families sharing deep personal links to our proud ANZAC legacy.
“At 11am on 11 November 1918, the guns on the Western Front finally fell silent, marking the end of four long years of brutal conflict.
“World War I cost over 16 million lives worldwide, including more than 60,200 Australians.
“More than 15,000 Tasmanians volunteered to serve at the time with 3,000 making the ultimate sacrifice and many others returning with lasting wounds, both visible and unseen.”
