Madeleine Ogilvie, Minister for the Environment
The Tasmanian Government is progressing plans for a contemporary biodiversity offset framework for the State.
Minister for Environment, Madeleine Ogilvie, said the Government will work together with the community and industry to develop the framework.
“Our Government will develop a clear vision for a Tasmanian Biodiversity Offsets Policy as part of our Economic Statement, which focuses on building a stronger economy, improving essential services and creating the conditions for every region to grow,” Minister Ogilvie said.
“We are committed to protecting Tasmania’s natural environment while ensuring clarity for managing offsets in Tasmania, to keep our State moving forward with sustainable development, including housing and renewable energy projects.
"Tasmania is a unique landscape with over 50 per cent of its land mass protected within the reserve estate.
“What we require is greater flexibility for offset strategies that are tailored to our unique species and island circumstances.
“This framework will be Tasmanian-specific, while aligning with new national environmental reforms where possible, to provide certainty and streamline approvals for major development projects.
“We will also focus on driving science-based investment, including species research and technology solutions, to deliver tangible on-ground biodiversity and conservation outcomes.”
The Tasmanian Government’s framework will deliver a modern, fit-for-purpose biodiversity offset management approach, which will include opportunities for consultation.
Any changes to the Biodiversity Offsets Policy will need to be supported by the Federal Government under bilateral arrangements.
