Guy Barnett, Minister for Small Business, Trade and Consumer Affairs

Pets as a right in rentals is one step closer with the Residential Tenancy Amendment Bill 2025 passing the second reading in the Legislative Council.

Minister for Small Business, Trade and Consumer Affairs, Guy Barnett, said Tasmanians are now a whisker away from not needing to choose between a home and the pet they love.

"Our Government is helping Tasmanians deal with the challenges that they face with compassion and commonsense," Minister Barnett said.

"For many Tasmanians, pets are part of the family.

“This Bill strikes the right balance, ensuring property owners are protected, while also ensuring Tasmanians don’t have to choose between a place to live and the pet they love.

"Our Government acknowledges the collaboration right across the Parliament on reforms, and thanks all members for their input.

"Similar laws already operate in other Australian jurisdictions, and I look forward to seeing Tasmanians enjoy that same right.”
