Jane Howlett, Minister for Racing
The Tasmanian Government is progressing the phasing out of greyhound racing, with legislation introduced today to end the code by 30 June 2029 and increase safeguards for the greyhounds.
Minister for Racing, Jane Howlett, said the Government is delivering a sensible and measured phase out of greyhound racing which has participant and animal welfare at its core.
“We are delivering on our commitment and the interim Budget includes $500,000 to support its implementation,” Minister Howlett said.
“The Greyhound Racing Legislation Amendments (Phasing Out Reform) Bill 2025 will provide the framework to deliver this."
The interim Budget looks to the future with optimism and a dedicated sense of purpose, building on the success of the past decade.
Minister Howlett said stakeholder engagement has helped shape the new legislation.
“I thank the Tasmanian Racing Integrity Commissioner Sean Carroll for his work to date on the plan to deliver this transition, which is well underway," Minister Howlett said.
“I also want to commend the work of the Department of Natural Resources Environment Tasmania (NRE Tas) in drafting this legislation.
“The Commissioner’s Greyhound Racing Transition Working Group has also provided valuable input into the drafting process from its community discussions and feedback."
The Parliament’s Joint Standing Committee on Greyhound Racing Transition has been formed and will oversee the phaseout.
Minister Howlett said she will appear before the Committee on Friday and welcomed the opportunity to outline the Government’s approach.
“We will continue progressing the legislation to ensure that the important changes to safeguard animal welfare can be made in a timely fashion," Minister Howlett said.
“The Tasmanian Government is delivering for Tasmanians and working together to move our state forward."
