New biosecurity technology protecting our borders

The Tasmanian Government is continuing to strengthen our biosecurity system, building on the advantages of being an island state to reduce the risk of pests and diseases crossing our borders.

Brand new produce x-ray machines have been installed at Hobart and Launceston Airports, capable of detecting biosecurity risk matter in the hand luggage of travellers.

Minister for Primary Industries and Water, Gavin Pearce, said biosecurity is vitally important to our island state, and it’s a responsibility that falls to all of us.

“We are delivering for Tasmania with these new x-ray machines, which will strengthen our biosecurity capabilities,” Minister Pearce.

“By implementing this new technology, our much-loved detector dogs can focus on carousel baggage while staff use the x-rays for passengers at the arrival gate.

“These new machines are ready in time for the higher biosecurity risk months over spring and summer when plant pests and diseases start to become more active.

“It’s a timely reminder for Tasmanians to keep an eye out for anything unusual in their fruit and vegetables and report any signs of fruit fly or other pests or diseases immediately to Biosecurity Tasmania.”
