Improving access to justice for Tasmanians

The Tasmanian Government is working hard to ensure Tasmanians right across the state have the access to justice they deserve. 

Last week’s interim Budget injected an additional $4 million over the next two years for Tasmania Legal Aid, building on the Government’s $10 million investment in the 2024-25 Budget. 

Attorney-general, Guy Barnett, said our Government is delivering for Tasmanians, supporting them with compassion and common sense. 

“This additional funding will support Tasmania Legal Aid to meet the increasing demand for their critical services, ensuring our legal system continues to serve Tasmanians,” the Attorney said. 

“This important investment will also help to ease court backlogs by providing representation services to people in the criminal courts, as well representation services for people appearing in the Mental Health and Guardianship Divisions of TASCAT."

Tasmania Legal Aid Director, Kristen Wylie, thanked the Tasmanian Government for its recognition of, and investment in, critical legal aid services. 

“This funding represents a commitment to ensure that the Tasmanian justice system can function more effectively and sustainably – now, and into the future.”
