An amendment to section 196 of the Electoral Act 2004, which will allow names and images of candidates in advertising, has been introduced into the House of Assembly.
The Bill limits the application of section 196 to how-to-vote cards only, and modifies the wording to ensure that the now limited prohibition extends to “keeping on display” as well as the initial act of printing, publishing and distribution.
This bill replicates the Electoral Amendment Bill 2024 that passed the House of Assembly unamended but had not passed the Legislative Council prior to Labor’s unnecessary election.
Attorney-General, Guy Barnett, said our Government is continuing to deliver transparency and accountability for Tasmanians.
“The amendment Bill will modernise the Electoral Act 2004 and bring Tasmania’s law in line with other jurisdictions,” the Attorney said.
“By modernising this 20-year-old legislation, we are providing clarity and consistency for political candidates and parties.
“Importantly, this amendment will also ensure members of the community can hold members and candidates to account.”
