Guy Barnett, Attorney-General
The Commission for Children and Young People Bill 2025 has passed the House of Assembly, progressing a key recommendation of the Commission of Inquiry.
Attorney-General, Guy Barnett, thanked all of those who provided feedback and input on the Bill.
“This is a tremendous step forward in keeping Tasmanian children safe,” the Attorney-General said.
“The Bill will establish a Commission for Children and Young People, strengthening Tasmania’s oversight system and serving as a strong advocate for young people.
“A new Commissioner for Children and Young People will be the head of the agency, supported by a Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People and a dedicated Child Advocate.
The Commission’s key roles will include:
- Recommending system improvements to Government;
- Conducting inquiries into systemic issues;
- Promoting the safety and wellbeing, rights, and participation of children and young people; and
- Monitoring and reviewing their wellbeing, care and treatment in out-of-home care or the youth justice system, including data and information about serious incidents.
“Our Government is delivering for Tasmanians, continuing to ensure our justice system protects and serves some of our most vulnerable.
“I look forward to seeing this key recommendation of the Commission of Inquiry progress through the Parliament.”
