Madeleine Ogilvie, Minister for Community and Multicultural Affairs

The Tasmanian Government will conduct an independent needs analysis of the Neighbourhood House network to better understand demand for services they provide.
Minister for Community and Multicultural Affairs, Madeleine Ogilvie, said $150,000 has been allocated for the analysis, which will identify the long-term sustainability needs of the House network.
“Tasmania’s Neighbourhood Houses have a long history in Tasmania and enjoy strong support in their local communities and bipartisan support across the Parliament,” Minister Ogilvie said.
“While funding for Neighbourhood Houses has increased from $4.7 million in 2013-14 to over $15 million in this Budget, we want to ensure that we understand the resources required so Houses can support the communities they serve.”
The needs analysis will look at:
  • staffing, volunteers and their safety;
  • operational costs;
  • the existing tiered framework for funding;
  • support being provided in local communities;
  • the location of Houses in relation to need;
  • the governance framework and the role of the peak body; and
  • the opportunity for community capacity building and partnerships.
Minister Ogilvie said the analysis will also review the funding agreements across the Neighbourhood House network, reporting and streamlining the administrative burden.
“We want to help Tasmanians deal with the challenges they face with compassion and commonsense,” Minister Ogilvie said.
“We are ensuring the sustainability of Houses which operate in a bespoke manner, adapting to the needs of their regions, doing wonderful things for the communities they serve.”
The Needs Analysis will get underway early next year.
