Jo Palmer, Minister for Children and Youth

The Tasmanian Government is strengthening its commitment to keeping children safe and families together, investing $8 million over two years for the Intensive Family Engagement Service.

The service is a voluntary program designed to assist families who are facing challenges that could affect a child or young person’s safety or wellbeing.

Minister for Children and Youth, Jo Palmer, said the service provides hands-on, intensive support to help parents build on their strengths, so children can remain safely in their family home.

“We continue to see encouraging outcomes for families who are engaged with the program,” Minister Palmer said.

“Last financial year, more than 91 per cent of families who participated in the program reached their goals and did not require statutory intervention.

“We are delivering for Tasmania by investing in services like this, ensuring families can access the right support at the right time, and that more children and young people can grow up safe and connected.”

The Department for Education, Children and Young People works with community organisations such as Key Assets, 54 Reasons (Save the Children Australia), Life Without Barriers, and the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre to deliver tailored support to families across the State.

Minister Palmer said supporting families is a key priority for the Tasmanian Government.

“This investment makes sure more Tasmanian families get the help they need to stay strong, stay connected and stay together,” Minister Palmer said.
