Roger Jaensch, Minister for Finance
Dean Winter will say anything but the truth.
His repeated attempts to claim Labor left Tasmania with no debt is shameful, after again trying to peddle this tired mistruth with the media.
Unfortunately for Mr Winter, the net debt position that Labor left is outlined in black and white in the 2013-2014 Budget papers:
“It is estimated that Net Debt will be $226.1 million as at 30 June 2014 and will increase in 2015”.
Not only that, they left $5 billion in unfunded superannuation liability.
The Tasmanian Liberal Government inherited a budget that was full of debt, full of unfunded public service positions, full of unfunded superannuation liability and a broken economy.
The fact of the matter is that not only was there debt, but there was also increasing debt, and it took the fiscally responsible Liberals to find out what the mess was.
Mr Winter takes Tasmanians for fools.
First, he advocated for the privatisation of government businesses until as late as last year – conveniently forgetting his own election policy was to sell Entura.
Mr Winter has also forgotten where he was born and raised – was it Kingston, Hobart or the West Coast? We are still not quite sure.
Now, he's continuing to mislead Tasmanians by saying Labor didn't leave debt when he knows its not true.
Mr Winter should spend less time trying to bend the truth and more time coming up with an alternative budget.
