Tasmania’s container refund scheme, Recycle Rewards, has launched with resounding success, with more than 250,000 containers deposited on the first day.
Minister for the Environment, Madeleine Ogilvie, said the scheme has already proven extremely popular across the State.
“On Recycle Rewards’ first day, an astonishing collection of more than 256,000 drink containers, marking a significant step in the Tasmanian scheme, reducing litter and benefiting communities,” Minister Ogilvie said.
"Tasmanians can receive a 10-cent refund for every eligible container at one of our 40 refund points across the State.
“This significant success on the scheme’s first day shows the support for Recycle Rewards across the community.
“More than 110 community organisations and sporting clubs are benefitting from the scheme, helping to fundraise for important grassroots projects.”
Tor Eirik Knutsen, Chairman of TOMRA Cleanaway and President of TOMRA Asia said in his view that it was the most successful take up of a scheme on day 1 that he has witnessed globally.
Recent schemes that Tor has overseen have included Romania, Ireland, Slovakia and Austria.
To claim your refund, return the empty container to a refund point and receive 10 cents for every eligible container.
Tasmanians can choose to receive a voucher, or cash if you’re at a depot, or directly donate to one of the Donation Partners.
A phased roll out of refund points is underway and, once the network is fully established, there will be a network of 49 refund points across the State, including on King and Flinders Islands.
