Club gatherings, weddings, community events and more will have access to improved kitchen and bathroom facilities, with the Tasmanian Government committing much-needed funding to the Penguin Sports and Services Club in the upcoming 2025-26 Budget.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the club’s 650 plus members will reap the benefits of the upgrades to a venue that is at the heart of this North West Coast community.

“When the facility was constructed in the 1970s few would have anticipated the club would have expanded and grown to what it is today, servicing multiple clubs, community organisations and gatherings,” the Premier said.

“The Tasmanian Government congratulates the hardworking volunteers and management team on the thousands of hours they put into making sure the Penguin Sports and Services Club is a viable place for the community to socialise and hold events.

“The club is an excellent example of the benefits to all of shared facilities and it is pleasing to be able to assist the members with a grant of $450,000 to upgrade the kitchen and bathrooms in the 2025-26 Budget.

“The funds are part of $7 million in legacy precinct investment for sporting facilities across the North West, to build a better Tasmania: now, and for the future.”

Liberal Candidate for Montgomery, Stephen Parry, said the growth in hospitality services provided by the club meant jobs for local people.

“The Penguin Sports and Services Club employs 15 people and serves up to 120 meals a night on Thursdays to Saturdays from their existing facilities,” he said.

“Their efforts are a credit to the staff, volunteers and the committee members who have shown foresight in planning for the future.

“A new, purpose-built kitchen will bring the existing facilities into the 21st Century, ensuring staff have access to modern and contemporary catering equipment when they are feeding locals and visitors.

“I congratulate the club on their efforts to secure this funding.”
