A new Police taskforce has been launched to tackle anti-social behaviour and retail crime in the Glenorchy municipality.

Recidivist offenders and youth crime will be a key focus of the Taskforce, with Tasmania Police data showing just 57 people made up 50 per cent of youth crime charges across the state in 2024.

Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier, Simon Behrakis, welcomed the increase in Police presence in the community.

“Our police do a phenomenal job keeping our communities safe, and I thank them for all they continue to do,” Mr Behrakis said.

“As a Government, we have work underway to see how we can best address the rise in youth crime.

“We will not let Tasmania become like Victoria or Queensland.

“All options are on the table, including toughening bail and sentencing laws, as well as more diversion options.

“This isn’t going to be an issue that is fixed overnight, but we have started immediately.

“Because Tasmanians want action, and that’s what we’ll deliver.”
