The long-term future of Burnie's Terminal 4 has been secured.
The Tasmanian Government welcomes the signing of a Heads of Agreement between TasPorts and Strait Link.
This important milestone supports the continued reliability of Tasmania’s Bass Strait freight services and ensures the Port of Burnie remains a cornerstone of the State’s freight and logistics network.
Minister for Infrastructure, Kerry Vincent, said the Agreement outlines the key commercial terms for a lease of up to 30 years, providing long-term confidence for industry and supporting future investment in port infrastructure.
“This agreement ensures Tasmania’s supply chain remains strong, sustainable and competitive into the future,” Minister Vincent said.
“Strait Link transports a significant portion of the overnight Bass Strait freight volume, making it a vital contributor to Tasmania’s transport network.
“This agreement ensures our exporters, manufacturers and regional communities continue to have access to reliable, daily freight services and is a major step toward securing the future of Tasmania’s supply chain.
The agreement also reflects a transition to TasPorts’ standardised Schedule of Port Charges, supporting sustainable pricing and consistency across port users.
“This agreement is a strong vote of confidence in Tasmania’s future economic growth and ensures TasPorts and Strait Link are better positioned to invest in the long-term infrastructure that Tasmania needs to stay competitive,” Minister Vincent said.
"I'd like to congratulate TasPorts and Strait Link on working so constructively and professionally to achieve an outcome in the best interests of Tasmanians."
Final terms are expected to be completed by mid-2025.
