The Tasmanian Government is backing business and economic growth, and our landmark Government business reforms are a key part of this.

Tasmanian Government businesses should deliver services to Tasmanians at the lowest sustainable cost while also growing our economy and engaging with business and community in a constructive manner.

Today, the Tasmanian Government has released the Government Business Governance Framework Reform Paper.

This Paper details the significant work underway to reform the way Government businesses operate and provides a summary of how each reform is proposed to be implemented.

Treasurer, Guy Barnett, said the Government was ensuring Government businesses took a Team Tasmania approach.

“Our Government business reform agenda has been described as the most ambitious plan of the last 20 years by the Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry,” the Treasurer said.

“At the core of these reforms is ensuring that Government businesses are making decisions that are in the long-term interest of their owners, Tasmanians.

“We want them to take a Team Tasmania approach to how they do business.

“Ensuring efficiency, productivity and value for money from our Government businesses is a key component of our sustainable pathway to surplus.

“Now we are preparing to take the next steps of this ambitious reform agenda.”

The Government business Governance Framework Reform Paper will inform the second tranche of legislative reforms included in the Government Business Governance Reforms Bill 2025, with the first tranche set to be debated in Parliament in the coming weeks.

The Treasurer said work was also underway to reform Government business boards, implement a new board evaluation framework and facilitate an independent review of Government business boards.

“Since we announced this significant body of work in November last year, we have not been sitting idle,” the Treasurer said.

“These key reforms are backed by our 2025-26 Budget, ensuring the necessary support is in place to continue this important work.

“Accountability to Tasmanians is critical, and our Government businesses must be focused on delivering the best possible outcomes for our State.

“This is critical to our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, and I look forward to working on it.”
