Eric Abetz, Minister for Transport

Motoring enthusiasts are invited to have their say on the eligibility criteria for Tasmania’s Special Interest Vehicles scheme, as part of a review of the scheme’s guidelines.

Minister for Transport, Eric Abetz, said feedback was sought from participants in relation to the Special Interest Vehicles scheme to help identify where improvements could be made.

“The Tasmanian Government is delivering on its election promise to review the Special Interest guidelines and application process to make sure they are clear, easy to follow and match the intent of the scheme,” Minister Abetz said.

“It follows on from changes delivered earlier this year as part of our First 100 Days of delivery, to allow Special Interest Vehicles to display personalised number plates.

“The Special Interest Vehicles scheme is popular with car enthusiasts, but we know there are improvements that can be made. For example, the vehicle criteria could be clearer and the rather lengthy handbook could be shortened and simplified.

“The Special Interest Vehicles scheme is unique to Tasmania. It provides discounted registration for motoring enthusiast’s vehicles.

“There are around 8,600 vehicles in the scheme, and we’d like to hear from the owners of those vehicles about how we can improve the guidelines and support this community.

“Through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we’re continuing to cut a path through red tape to make life and doing business easier for all Tasmanians.”

The review will consider whether changes should be made to allow campervans to enter the scheme or for participating vehicles to tow or carry a load.

An online survey has been launched to gather feedback for the review. Special Interest Vehicle owners will be contacted directly with an invitation to complete the survey. Other interested Tasmanians are also welcome to contribute their thoughts.

The survey will close on 29 January.
