Jo Palmer, Minister for Education

More Tasmanian students will benefit from a free, healthy school breakfast each school day, with the Variety Breakfast Program expanding to 36 additional government schools next year.

The new schools will join the program from Term 1 next year, following an Expression of Interest process which was completed last month.

Backed by a $6.5 million, four-year investment through the Better and Fairer Schools Agreement, the school breakfast program is delivered in partnership with Variety Tasmania.

The program already operates in 40 schools, providing free, healthy breakfasts to help students begin their day ready to learn.

Minister for Education, Jo Palmer, announced the expansion during a visit to Glenorchy Primary School, which will be one of the new schools to join the program in 2026.

“The response from schools involved in the program has been incredibly positive and reflects the positive impact it is having on student learning and behaviour,” Minister Palmer said.

“This program also supports families with cost-of-living pressures by ensuring students can access a healthy breakfast that sets them up for learning.

“Expanding the program takes us another step toward our goal of providing free breakfast to every student in every Tasmanian Government school.”

School breakfast programs have been shown to lead to better attendance, improved concentration and stronger educational outcomes, giving more Tasmanian students the fuel they need to thrive.

“We know good nutrition and learning go hand-in-hand, and this program delivers for Tasmanian students by giving them the energy they need to succeed,” Minister Palmer said.
