Bridget Archer, Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing

The Tasmanian Government is encouraging people to prepare for a safe and healthy festive period by planning ahead and knowing the available treatment options for medical care.

While many Tasmanians will be enjoying time with family and friends, hospitals and ambulance services typically experience an increase in demand through the holiday season.

Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Bridget Archer, urged Tasmanians to make a health plan for a safe and healthy holiday period.

“Now is the time to fill prescriptions you may need over the coming weeks and complete any health follow-ups such as blood tests or scans,” Minister Archer said.

“Make sure you check your doctor or healthcare provider’s availability over the festive period, as they may have different operating hours.

“If you do need medical care or support, there are a range of community-based health services that can provide advice or treatment for non-emergency issues.

“This includes the network of Medicare Urgent Care Clinics and community pharmacies, virtual care service Care@home, and numerous mental health support options in person or over the phone.

“If you are not sure what to do, you can contact healthdirect on 1800 022 222 to speak with a registered nurse. This service is available 24/7 and can help guide you to the most appropriate treatment option for you or your loved one.

“Importantly, if you do need emergency care, Tasmanians should always call Triple Zero (000) or go to the nearest emergency department – our dedicated staff will be there to care for you.”

Minister Archer also thanked staff across the health system for their hard-work and dedication over the festive season.

“I would like to pay tribute to the thousands of amazing health workers and volunteers who will be caring for others over the festive season,” Minister Archer said.

“To the doctors, nurses, paramedics, aged care workers, orderlies, catering staff, cleaners, volunteers and everyone contributing to keep our community safe and healthy these holidays – I sincerely thank you.”
